Actor británico. Comenzó su carrera como actor a los 18 años y obtuvo renombre en las décadas de 1930 y 1940 al representar roles como Peer Gynt, Petruchio, Falstaff y Volpone en el teatro
Old Vic, logrando ser reconocido como uno de los más grandes actores de su tiempo. En 1933 debutó en el cine y se hizo famoso por interpretar personajes ingeniosos y de buena crianza, y posteriormente por sus papeles como anciano excéntrico. Entre sus numerosas películas se cuentan
